In May 2022, the NCAA announced that teams would be allowed to participate in a single season-ending tournament. Golfweek has partnered with Ak-Chin Southern Dunes just south of Phoenix to host the NGI.

The NGI will once again host a men’s championship and a women’s one, with each having a maximum 18 teams, playing 54 holes in stroke play. The women will compete first from May 9-12. The men will follow the next week, from May 16-19.

Last year, 13 men’s and 10 women’s team participated. This May, more teams will be expected to participate. Rankings and committee picks are used to limit the field to 18 teams.

The NGI allows teams outside the NCAA postseason to win their own season-ending championship.
