The Alabama sophomore played this week’s 2024 The American Express as a sponsor exemption and left with the trophy after a dazzling performance. Despite a late charge from some of the world’s best players, Dunlap shot a 2-under 70 to claim victory at 29 under and become the first amateur since Phil Mickelson in 1991 to win on the PGA Tour on Sunday at PGA West in La Quinta, California. He’s also the 12th sponsor exemption to win on Tour.

Dunlap, the 2023 U.S. Amateur champion and No. 3-ranked amateur in the world, has made three starts this season for the Crimson Tide, one of which was a win at the SEC Match Play. As a freshman last year he had five top-10 finishes and a win at the Linger Longer Invitational.

As an amateur, Dunlap won’t be able to take home any prize money. Just a trophy and a great story to tell.
