Dunlap, 19, a rising sophomore from Alabama, was the best amateur male golfer this summer. He proved it in the largest amateur event in the entire world.
Dunlap and Shipley were tied at 18 holes in the morning, but Dunlap gradually pulled away while Shipley, 22, a graduate student from Ohio State, committed small errors. Dunlap took the lead after the 22nd and 21st holes of the afternoon session. His putter sealed the deal at the end.
