Nick Dunlap wins the 123rd North & South Amateur in Pinehurst

Two months will pass before the Walker Cup starts. Nick Dunlap, a sophomore from Alabama, has made it clear that he deserves to be part of this team.

Dunlap, whose biennial competition is fast approaching, added another signature amateur victory to his record Sunday morning when he won the 123rd North & South Amateur in Pinehurst No. In the match-play finale, Dunlap defeated Stanford’s Karl Vilips by one hole. Due to thunderstorms that impacted Pinehurst, North Carolina on Saturday, Dunlap’s championship match was completed on Sunday morning. He won his second win in two weeks.

Dunlap has won the Northeast Amateur in Rhode Island. His back-to-back wins almost guarantee his inclusion on the Walker Cup team. will join the other three players already confirmed to compete at St. Andrews this September.

Dunlap, a freshman at Alabama, was named to the second team of All-Americans. He finished the year 16th on the Golfweek/Sagarin ranking. He qualified for last week’s U.S. Open, which was held at Los Angeles Country Club.

He has now won two out of the three Elite Amateur Series tournaments of the summer. The North & South event is the third in a series of seven events for men. The 119th Trans-Mississippi Amateur will be held at Brook Hollow Golf Club, Dallas from July 10-14.
