The R&A has announced the prize money payouts at the Open Championship, which will be held in Royal Liverpool from July 16-23. The 2023 Champion Golfer Of the Year will earn the highest amount of money ever paid out for a championship.
The winner of the Claret Jug will take home $3 million. Second ($1,708,000), third ($1,095,000), and fourth ($1,095,000) all will also be in the seven-figure range. The total purse is $16.5 million. This represents an 18% rise from 2022.
Martin Slumbers, CEO of the R&A, said: “Our goal is to make sure The Open remains the pinnacle in world golf. We have almost doubled our prize money since 2016.” While we see substantial increases in prize funds across the men’s pro game, we are fulfilling a wider obligation to sport by elevating AIG Women’s Open and strengthening pathways in elite amateur golf. We are also encouraging more people to play the game around the globe. “We believe that achieving this balance is crucial to the future of golf.”
