Paul Azinger and Fry/Straka Design will build the course at Miakka Golf Club, Florida

Aug, 2023

Paul Azinger, a former PGA Tour player and architect at Fry/Straka Global Golf Course Design, have teamed up to create 18 holes for the new Miakka Golf Club on the riverside in Myakka City.

The club will be located on 1,100 acres of land along the Myakka river, about 30 miles south of the Sarasota/Bradenton International Airport and not far from Gulf of Mexico between Tampa & Naples. The club is owned jointly with TerraNova Equestrian Center, The Estates at TerraNova and Florida entrepreneur Steve Herrig.

The club will have a full 18-hole course as well as a par-3 course of 12 holes, a short-game facility covering 7 acres, a lighted course for putting and a practice range with a performance centre. The club also plans to build cabins, both for its members and their guests. The short course is scheduled to open in 2020, and the main course in 2025.

In a press release announcing this club, Jason Straka, principal at Fry/Straka Global Golf Course Design said, “This is one the best natural sites to play golf, and one of our best teams.” The property boasts an amazing two-mile frontage along Myakka River, with hundreds of mature hammocks of oak trees. More than 1,100 acres are being used to build the golf course and its facilities.

The course will be like the famous Australian Sandbelt courses, with wide turf corridors and no rough. There are also distinctive bunkers and natural-area hazards that stick out into the line of play. Azinger is a former Ryder Cup Captain who grew up and now lives in Bradenton, Florida.

Azinger stated in the press release that “this is my home and it’s extremely important to me.” “Steve Herrig and his team have a strong commitment to make Miakka Golf Club the best private club in the world. He has assembled a team of all-stars and will do anything to achieve this goal.

Dana Fry says his design team goes to great lengths in order to provide superior conditions for playing.

Fry stated in a media release that “the entire 7,700-yard course will be sand capped with a proprietary mixture of sand, Profile soil conditioner and other additives.” “Everything except the greens will have sod.” The entire course will also have underdrains that are large to provide a fast and firm playing surface all year round. Miakka has recently acquired 1,600 acres adjacent to the course and will become the first Florida golf course with a sod farm. The Stadium and Lazer zoysia will be grown here and used for the fairways and tees.
