Pawleys Plantation, South Carolina has been renovated by Nicklaus Design.

Oct, 2023

Nicklaus design has renovated the Pawleys Plantation Golf & Country Club in Myrtle Beach. The club reopened its doors this month. Jack Nicklaus designed the layout of Pawleys island near the Atlantic Ocean in 1988.

The resort course had seen trees grow to the point that they were encroaching on it, and the greens themselves had shrunk. This is a common condition at most courses. Troy Vincent, an associate of Nicklaus’s, worked with the plan Nicklaus had laid out during his 2018 visit to renovate and make the course more enjoyable.

The work also included:

  • The greens were stripped, restored to their original size and re-grassed using TifEagle Bermuda. Resizing efforts recovered nearly 40,000 sq. ft. of putting surfaces across the course.
  • The collars on each green were also resurfaced using a Bermuda grass variety that can resist mutation and is mowed at a lower height.
  • On 10 holes, the large fairway bunkers were replaced by smaller traps and native areas as well as expanded fairways.
  • The club has also begun a renovation of the clubhouse.

Vincent, who worked with Jack Nicklaus 15 years ago, stated in a press release announcing reopening that “we followed Jack’s 2018 ideas”. We wanted to make the course easier to play, so that players have more options. And we did it. “I think everyone will be pleased.”

The club is owned by Founders Group International which also owns 21 other courses in Myrtle Beach.
