PGA Tour’s Jay Monahan: ‘I know that people will call me a liar’

Jun, 2023

On Tuesday morning , PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan accepted the framework of a deal to merge the commercial operations with DP World Tour PIF. Monahan’s stance was so radically different from his previous hard-line position that he stood in front of his players and took media questions the next day.

There are many questions raised, but the first is how did Monahan go from refusing for several years to meet with Saudis to getting in bed with them?

He said, “We realized we’re better together than fighting or apart. By thinking about the whole game and eliminating friction that has been there and doing it in a manner where we can progress,” he explained. “It was a matter of looking at the bigger picture and saying I didn’t believe it was right or sustainable for there to be tension in our sport. And to be able organize and orient it in a manner where we are in control, we have a world-class and great investor and I recognise everything that I have said in the previous and my prior positions.”

“I know that people will call me hypocritical. Every time I made a statement, I did so based on the information I had available at the moment and a person who was trying to compete with the PGA Tour or our players. I accept these criticisms. But circumstances do change. “I think that by looking at the bigger picture and analyzing it in this way, we got to this point.”

Monahan provided more information on the timeline and noted that secret conversations were conducted in the past seven weeks. Four in-person meetings, as well as a number video calls and telephone conversations were held.

Monahan said that it is not unusual for the information to be tightly controlled in these conversations. In our case, the information was kept very close. Two prominent Policy Board members sat with me. Our chairman Ed Herlihy and Jimmy Dunne. We finally got to a point where we had finalized everything and had a communication plan that we began tomorrow.

Monahan said that Saudi Arabia’s financial resources would allow the Tour’s players to experience “meaningful growth”.

He said that the cost of fighting a war against LIV was significant. “I am grateful that the response we have received from our sponsors and partners in regard to ’24 has been positive. This will help us mitigate those losses we experienced in.

“We have been handicapped. We are a pass-through organisation. This is a great opportunity for us to invest our dollars into growth businesses. We’re in a good position to tell our members today that, despite the general uncertainty in the commercial world going forward, we will experience significant growth.

This puts us in the position of being able to invest capital in businesses that will ultimately generate a profit that we can reinvest into our players.

Monahan said that it is too early to decide the path back for LIV members, but those who chose loyalty made the right choice.

They’ve helped re-design the future of the PGA Tour. He said that they had moved us towards a more competitive model. “I believe that any player who has stayed will realize that the money they’re going make, the strength this platform, and all the other things we discuss are going to place them in a very strong position. They will win. “They’ll continue to grow and we are in a position of control on their behalf, as we move ahead in this structure.”
