Ernie Els is the designer of a new golf course in Cabo, Mexico. It’s called Oleada Golf Links Los Cabos. The course is the centerpiece of Oleada Pacific Living and Golf – a 860-acre oceanfront community located 15 minutes away from downtown Cabo.
The Pacific Ocean is the backdrop to the course that will be built in a desert landscape. In a media release, it was stated that the site has dunes and ridges of sand which are ideal for golf. Greg Letsche is also slated to be involved in the project. He is a senior design associate at Ernie Els Design.
In a media release, Els, a South African golfer who has won 19 PGA Tour titles and three PGA Tour Champions, stated that “the native contours and dune forms are so good” that very little earthmoving would be needed to build the course. “The shaping will be minimalistic. Mother Nature’s creations are too good to be improved. The golf course we build at Oleada, will remain long after my death. “That means something to me and makes me very proud.”
Oleada’s plans also include oceanfront homes, and the first stage of development includes the golf course as well as three resorts. The project started in January and is scheduled to open in 2026. For its first season, the course will be open to non-resort players.
Els Design has constructed more than a dozen golf courses in countries such as United Arab Emirates (UAE), Malaysia, South Africa and the Bahamas. On its website, Els Design lists six more courses that are in the development stage in Indonesia, Vietnam and Cambodia, Egypt, Dominican Republic, Croatia, and the Dominican Republic.
In a media release, Els stated that Oleada’s rolling dunes, elevation differences, and magnificent desert-meets ocean setting will produce a test that is versatile and beautiful.
