In 1988, the jump in Poppie’s Pond was a tradition at Mission Hills for the women’s first major championship.
The Chevron Championship has moved from Rancho Mirage in California to The Club at Carlton Woods outside Houston. With the move came the question of whether the winner would jump. It was not easy to answer because of the presence of snakes and alligators .
Vu, her caddie and the other players walked past the 18th hole during the practice round to discuss whether she would take the plunge.
“I said, ‘Yeah I will jump. Vu said after winning that he would jump if he won. “I was thinking about the snake we saw on 17 Pond yesterday or Saturday, and I jumped into the pond today.”
She jumped.
The championship was the first to be held in Texas and the pond jump is a traditional event.
