Roger Maltbie was born in Modesto, California and raised in San Jose.
After competing at San Jose State University and San Jose City College, Maltbie entered the PGA Tour in 1974. He was a member of the PGA Tour from 1975-1996. Maltbie won five events, including the Ed McMahon Jaycees Quad Cities Open in 1975 and the NEC World Series of Golf in 1996. In 1976, he won the first ever Memorial Tournament by playing in a playoff with Hale Irwin.

Maltbie started his playing career in 1992. He eventually became the lead reporter on golf at NBC Sports. After , his last year as a golf reporter for NBC Sports was 2022. He wasn’t renewed for 2023.
