The Skinny: PXG made GEN6 irons’ faces thinner to improve ball speed and distance. The 0311 P iron is better for distance, and the 0311XP iron is more game-enhancing.

PXG’s Deep Dive irons are bigger than they looked for a decade. The brand’s designers aspire to create clubs that look like they belong in a single-digit-handicap golfer’s bag but deliver more power and forgiveness than a muscleback blade.

By using multi-material construction and a unique perimeter weigh system, the 0311 P GEN6 Irons and 0311 XP GEN6 Irons continue this tradition.

The five-strike process of forging 8620 steel rods into the chassis is used by both clubs. Each head is machined with a computer-controlled, fast-spinning bit that moves back and forth across the club, slicing off small pieces of metal. This ensures engineers’ designs are accurately reproduced every time.

The HT1770 stainless-steel faces of the 0311 XP GEN6 and 0311 P GEN6 irons are 15% thinner and 5g lighter than those in the GEN5 irons. PXG created a horseshoe-shaped area on the inner-facing face that PXG calls a Power Channel. This allows the face to bend more efficiently around its perimeter.

PXG stated that GEN6 irons are lighter and more flexible than other models, which helps to generate more speed and distance. This is especially true for shots outside of the hitting zone.

The U-shaped Power Channel encourages facial flexibility, while the XCOR2 material supports hitting area and absorbs vibrations. (David Dusek/Golfweek)

PXG has added a proprietary polymer called XCOR2 to each head. The polymer fills each head’s inner chamber, absorbs vibrations and enhances sound and feel. PXG stated that the material supports the face and would break or bend after a few hits, even without additional reinforcement. The XCOR2 does not reduce the area of the hitting surface from flexing.

PXG also added two tungsten weights to the toe and heel of the 0311 GEN6 Irons to increase stability. The tungsten screws not only add perimeter weighting but also lower the center gravity to encourage higher-flying shots and more steeper falls, which improves distance control and stops power on the greens.

The small tungsten screws provide perimeter weighting while the larger center screw allows for swing weight adjustments by fitters. (David Dusek/Golfweek)

A larger screw is located in the back of the clubs, which fitters can adjust to alter the swing weight of each individual iron.

The 0311 XP GEN6 Irons are a better distance iron for players. They have a shorter blade with slightly less offset, which can help golfers achieve a draw or fade faster than the 0311 XP GEN6 Irons.

The 0311 XP GEN6 is larger and more stable than the 0311 GEN6 irons.

The clubs can be ordered in a chrome finish with black accents or a Black Label Elite version featuring Xtreme Dark and steel fiber private reserve shafts.
