The skinny: First hollow-body PXG Iron designed for elite ball striking players, with internal polymer to help improve spin consistency.

The Deep Dive – PXG’s newest iron for ball strikers is the 0317T. This number 0317 designates scout snipers.

The 0317T irons are triple-forged with 8620 carbon steel for a soft feel on impact. After the forging is completed, the striking area of each head will be milled so that it is flat and perfectly level before the grooves can be milled in to the face. The back of each iron is milled as well, resulting in a series small, thin lines that are left behind by the computer-controlled high-speed bit.

The PXG 0317T has a thin topline with minimal offset, and a thin sole. (David Dusek/Golfweek)

The 0317 T is similar to the previously released 0317 ST blades, and 0317 CB Irons, with a thin topline and narrow sole, and a slight offset. The 0317 CB irons and the solid metal 0317 ST blades have the same shape, but the 0317 CB is hollow.

PXG’s game-improvement irons and maximum game-improvement irons have traditionally been designed with hollow heads filled a vibration-dampening material, supporting an ultra-thin face. The X COR material is also used in the latest offering of 0311 GEN6 Irons to help protect ball speed and increase the sweet spot. The 0317 T Irons are filled with S COR. This polymer is less elastic and therefore slower than X COR. However, it helps to produce a lower angle of launch and higher spin rates.

To bring the sweet spot closer to the center of the iron and to offset the weight from the hosel of this particular iron, PXG added a 15-gram internal tungsten weight to the toe.

The toe is fitted with an internal piece of tungsten that pulls the perfect hitting area in the middle of your face. (David Dusek/Golfweek)

PXG’s designers gave the 0317 a large weight at the back of the head, which can be switched during the fitting so that players and fitters could quickly test swing weights as golfers were testing clubs.

The PXG 317 T irons have a fairly standard loft, with the pitching wedge at 46.5 degrees and the 9 iron at 42 degrees. They are touted as PXG’s most forgiving irons. They claim that their moment of inertia is 11 percent more than the 0317CB and 14 percent more than the 0317ST. The clubs have a slightly larger blade and a thicker topline. However, the offset remains the same. These clubs are slimmer than the 0311 P Gen6 irons that were PXG’s former better-player distance iron.

Here are some close-up shots of the new PXG T 0317 irons.
