The skinny: PXG’s latest fairway woods are made with a variety of materials including stainless steel alloys, moveable weights and new stainless steel alloys to increase forgiveness.

Deep Dive: While golf equipment companies like PXG can’t control your swing speed or the way you hit the ball, through clever engineering and research, they are able to make clubs that optimize your good shots while reducing the severity of mis-hits. Fairway woods are a difficult job. They need to be able to hit the ball the same distance, on the same trajectory, whether you’re hitting shots from the tee, or the turf.

PXG’s Black Ops fairway wood uses exotic materials and features a hosel that can be adjusted, as well as weights that are movable. This helps golfers to hit their fairway shots further and more consistently.

The Black Ops fairway woodens are characterized by a high-strength alloy of stainless steel used on the face. PXG says it’s stronger than the steels used to make fairway woods. This allows for a thinner and lighter hitting area. The face is only 0.07 inch thick. This allows the ball to be more flexible when it hits, which leads to a faster ball, a greater launch angle, and less spinning.

Black Ops fairwaywoods are also made with a carbon fiber crown, which reduces the weight at the top of head and lowers center of gravity. The chassis was made of a lightweight but strong material called AM355 stainless, which allowed designers to reduce weight even further.

The Black Ops has three adjustable screws on the sole, located at the heel, the toe, and the middle-back area. Standard weights are a 12-gram back weight and 2.5-gram toe and heel weights. This is to increase forgiveness and create a greater launch angle. However, adding a heavier weight to the toe port or heel will cause a fade bias.

In order to help golfers choose a club with the perfect distance, PXG designed the Black Ops. The adjustable hosel allows the player to adjust the loft up or down by as much as 1.5 degrees. It can also be adjusted for the lie angle.
