Q&A with Zach Johnson, U.S. Ryder Cup Captain, on Tiger’s and Phil’s role, if any. And much more.

Jul, 2023

Zach Johnson is always talking about the Ryder Cup in Detroit.

The U.S. captain, speaking at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in New York last week invited questions about a variety of topics relating to the Stars and Stripes’ road game this September. Johnson, who has won 12 PGA Tour titles, including two majors, will have the difficult task of ending the U.S. losing streak abroad, which began in 1993 at Marco Simone GC.

Johnson said, “It was the best thing that I’ve been associated with golf.” He represented the U.S. five times as a player between 2006 and 2016 earning a total of nine points.

Johnson is aware of his difficult task, but he may also have the most talented team in recent memory. The top six players in points will automatically qualify for the tournament and he will then be able to choose six additional players to complete his team. The Official World Golf Ranking currently has 14 Americans in the top 20 (including Will Zalatoris who is out with a back problem).

What, if any role will Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson play with Team USA Has he lost sleep over the job? Kim is heading to Rome for another fact-finding trip. Johnson answers these questions and many more in the Ryder Cup specific Q&A.
