Report: Sergio Garcia qualifies for the British Open but two other LIV stars opt out

Jun, 2023

Sergio Garcia has qualified for the event in 2023 at Hoylake. He is a two-time runner-up of The Open Championship.

After dropping to the 209th official world ranking, the Spaniard has one last chance to qualify for his 25th consecutive Open.

The Telegraph reported today that the 43 year old is ready for the trial of 288 runners, but his former Ryder Cup teammates Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter declined to participate.

Garcia’s close relationship with Rory McIlroy was strained by the trio’s LIV move.

If the latest reports can be believed, then it seems that Garcia is no longer as cold. With Garcia wishing to be a part of this years European Ryder Cup team, one could believe there was more to Garcia’s feelings.

This marks the end of a era for Westwood and Poulter. Both were stalwarts on the European Tour, and had 46 Open Championships in their combined history.

Westwood will be missing his 27th consecutive Open. The Ryder Cup “postman” was injured in 2016, but he will still miss only his second British Major since 2002.

Garcia is used to qualifying through lesser means.

The 36-time professional champion made it to the 24th U.S. Open in May with a birdie on the last hole of Northwood Club and Bent Tree Country Club, both located in Texas. Unfortunately, his 27th-place finish at LACC wasn’t enough to get him into Royal Liverpool.

Garcia wants to prove he’s still a contender at the top of the LIV rankings, even if he has to qualify or grind it out.
