How rankings work

The ” Mission of the OWGR Is to administer and publish a transparent and credible ranking based on relative performances of male golfers participating in Eligible Tours around the world.”

This is an explanation of the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings.

Jeff Sagarin’s rating system is based upon a mathematical formula which uses a player’s won-lost or tied record against other golfers when they played on the same course the same day. The stroke differential between these players then links all of the players together based on their common opponents. The ratings show who has been playing well in the last 52 weeks.

In both rankings, Jon Rahm is ranked first. However, there are some significant differences between the two systems in terms of where certain golfers are ranked.

Matt Fitzpatrick, for example, is fifth in OWGR and 24th in GW/Sags. Cameron Smith, of the LIV Golf League is now ranked No. The OWGR has him at 8 but he is ranked 42 in the GW/Sags. 42 in the GW/Sags.
