Robert Trent Jones Jr. will renovate and finish the North Course at Corica Park municipal in California

May, 2023

Robert Trent Jones Jr. signed on to renovate the North Course of Corica Park, in Alameda. The course, located just south of Oakland across the bay from San Francisco, is expected to open in December 2024.

The Jones Jr. renovation will not affect the front nine of North Course. This was renovated in 2021 by Marc Logan, with input from Golf Digest architect editor emeritus Rob Whitten. Logan’s plans for a new back nine were stopped by a legal dispute between him, the course operators, and the City of Alameda. The course was never finished. These legal issues were resolved by January 2023.

Robert Trent Jones II Golf Course Architects will be Jones’ company. They will adjust the front nine, while building the new nine. The work is expected to start in June. William Park Bell designed the original 18-hole North Course, which opened in 1927.

AmateurGolf.com is based at Corica Park, and is a partner with Golfweek. AmateurGolf.com covered the announcement.

South Course was designed by William Francis Bell Jr., son of William Park Bell and opened in 1957. Rees Jones (brother of Robert Trent Jones Jr.) renovated the 18-hole layout in 2018.

Greenway Golf was the initiator of the project. They are the long-term lessor, developer, and manager of this 333-acre complex. Greenway Golf belongs to Avani and Umesh Patels.

Jones Jr. stated in a press release that Jones Jr. had received the news, “The Patels and Greenway are a remarkable pair of golfers who have a vision that is a game changer for municipal golf. They see the potential for golf to play a role in combating climate change and creating green space for all.” Our goal is to fulfill their vision for a memorable and challenging golf experience, taking a holistic view of design and sustainability.

Greenway Golf stated in a media release that they have worked on upgrading the facility for the past 10 years. This includes the Mif Albaright Par-3 course, the Lucius Bateman Driving Range, and an extensive training facility.
