It’s the end for NBC and Golf Channel.
Golfweek confirmed that Gary Koch and Roger Maltbie will not be returning to broadcasts in 2023. Maltbie and Koch were informed by the network that the decision was taken to “refresh” their team for the future.
“Roger & Gary have been synonymous for NBC Sports’ coverage of golf for decades. Having educated and entertained multiple generation of viewers, and having made some the most memorable calls ever made in the history of this game,” Molly Solomon, Golf Channel Executive Producer, stated to Golfweek. Their professionalism and prowess are only matched by their character, as they have been great friends and teammates to many of us. We will pay tribute to their achievements during our coverage of December’s PNC Championship.”
Maltbie was initially told that 2021 would be his last year on the air before Jim “Bones’ Mackay, his on-air reporter for the network, left to serve as Justin Thomas’ caddie. Maltbie was a reporter on the course for 2022, but he wasn’t renewed for 2023. Maltbie, 71 years old, is a five-time winner of the PGA Tour. He had been covering golf since 1992 for NBC Sports.
Koch, 69 years old, joined NBC Sports in 1997 as a full-time reporter for the 1996 Players Championship. Six-time winner of Tour, Koch was an analyst in the tower covering the network’s PGA Tour coverage and major championship coverage.
They not only worked together on-air but also teamed up in winning the PGA Tour Champions’ Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf in three different divisions in the Raphael Division, in 2003, 2008, and 2009.
