McIlroy and Woods were both diagnosed with COVID-19 in a recent interview to the Independent. This was a week before the 2022 Open Championship at St. Andrews. McIlroy stated that the two began feeling symptoms after playing in the JP McManus Pro-Am in Adare Manor, Ireland. This was a week before the 2022 Open Championship at St. Andrews.

McIlroy stated, “So we both had COVID going to the Open.”

We had just played two rounds of golf at Adare, and our plan was to play Ballybunion Thursday. That morning, I felt a little achy and didn’t think much about it. JP gave us his helicopter and we rode down with (McIlroy’s Manager, Sean O’Flaherty), and (Woods’ Manager, Rob McNamara). McIlroy said that we got around well, flew back home to Adare for lunch and I feel stiff, sore, and tired. Erica, my wife, said that I was feeling strange. I just went upstairs to lay down for a while. After a couple of hours, the sweat started pouring off my body. Erica then took my temperature, which was extremely high. I called Tiger and said, “I’m not feeling so well here.” He then texted me at 10:30 that night with chills, fever, and I was like, “(expletive). Hell, I just gave Tiger COVID!” This is horrible! (laughing).

McIlroy was third at the Old Course that week, while Woods fell short of the cut.

In the interview, he explained that he had planned to arrive at Open early but was instead quarantined at Adare Manor.

“Everything smelled like vinegar to my nose the whole week of Open.” McIlroy said that everything was good. It was truly strange.
