Rory McIlroy may have been ranked No. He may be ranked No. 1 in the world but he is still No. When it comes to the PGA Tour’s Player Impact Program, Tiger Woods is 2nd.
McIlroy spoke with The Associated Press to reveal that despite Woods’s huge year in 2022, he couldn’t beat Woods for the top prize of the Tour’s lucrative bonus pool.
McIlroy stated, “Hey, he gave me a pretty good run.”
According to the report, the official PIP money was still being finalized. The Tour will announce the winners around Thanksgiving. The program will have 20 players and $100,000,000 in payouts. This is an increase from the $40 million paid to 10 players last year.
Woods is still recovering from an injury sustained in a single-car crash that almost cost him his leg. He won the PIP for the second consecutive year to win the $15 million prize. Woods, a 15-time major champion, competed in three events (all majors), making the cut at Masters before withdrawing at the PGA Championship. He also missed the Open Championship cut.
McIlroy won the FedEx Cup record-breaking third time. This was after a three-win season which saw 13 top-25 finishes and 14 made cuts in 16 events.
It was announced earlier this week Woods and McIlroy would team up to face Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth next year in Capital One’s The Match. At 6 p.m., the major champions will compete in a 12-hole tournament. ET at the Pelican Golf Club, Belleair, Florida hosts this week’s LPGA stop: the Pelican Women’s Championship.
