Rory McIlroy says TPC River Highlands, the host of the Travelers Championships, is outdated: ‘Technology passed this course by.’

Jun, 2023

Rory McIlroy doesn’t like tournaments such as the Travelers Championship.

McIlroy doesn’t enjoy courses where the best players can have birdie-fests and win titles. Keegan Brad won the title with a score of 23 under.

McIlroy stated after the final round that “unfortunately, technology has passed by this course.” It’s become obsolete with the rain and soft conditions.

When we visit courses like these, they don’t offer the same challenge as they used to.

TPC River Highlands, at 6,852 yard, is the second shortest golf course on the PGA Tour in this season. Port Royal hosts the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. Players took advantage of the favorable conditions in Northeast.

Rickie Foller and Denny McCarthy both shot 60. Patrick Cantlay shot a 61. More 62s, 64s and 63s were also recorded.

McIlroy then was asked what courses, like TPC River Highlands which has hosted Travelers Championships since 1984, could do to remain relevant in today’s sport.

“You can try to grow up the rough and hope for some firm conditions, so that it becomes tricky. The blueprint for a great golf course doesn’t involve growing up the rough and making the fairways narrow. “That bunches everybody together,” he said. The blueprint is similar to LACC, where you have large targets but you are penalized if you miss. This is not that kind of golf course. This is not the layout you’re looking for. “It doesn’t have enough land to do that.”

This is what happens when there are soft conditions and the best players on the planet.

The winning score at last week’s U.S. Open is 10 under. McIlroy was second with 9 under.

Jon Rahm won the American Express with a score of 27 under par. The tournament is played over three courses. Jason Day shot 23 under to win the AT&T Byron Nelson last month.
