Rory McIlroy will be in Dubai to compete in the DP World Tour Championship, where he hopes to win the season-long titles of both the pro and amateur tours.
McIlroy is the leader in the DP World Tour Rankings despite being winless on European circuit. This is thanks to his three consecutive top fives following his Atlanta win. McIlroy’s seven top-five finishes in 10 starts include his worst performance at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, T-12.
It was a crazy year.
McIlroy’s success on the course in 2022 has meant that he is the most vocal voice in the PGA Tour vs. the LIV Golf battle. His tone has changed in the last few months, as he waits for the two leagues, to settle the dispute, and to come up with an agreement for the benefit of the game.
He laid out a plan Tuesday for it to happen.
“Greg (Norman), needs to go. He must leave the stage,” McIlroy said to BBC. He’s done his job, but now is the time to tell him that you have this thing in motion. However, no one will talk to anyone unless there’s someone who can actually help to mend fences.
The Telegraph reported that LIV was seeking to replace Norman by Mark King, former TaylorMade CEO. LIV quickly denied this report.
McIlroy later disputed Norman’s comments that Tiger Woods and PGA Tour players should “thankful” LIV for their contribution to the game.
He said, “I’ve repeated this a million time: Tiger is why we are playing as hard as we are.” Tiger is responsible for the current stature of the game. Tiger’s generation and those who follow him have all benefited from his achievements and what they did for golf.
“I don’t believe Tiger should be grateful to anyone for anything.” Everybody else should be thankful .”
McIlroy looks forward to turning the page next month after a busy year on the course.
“I believe next year, if the stories can be about the golf and what’s going on on the course, that would be a great thing.”
