Rory McIlroy wants the Ryder Cup rules revised following Rahm’s LIV move

Dec, 2023

Questions are being raised about the Ryder Cup eligibility of Jon Rahm now that he has joined LIV Golf.

In Rome, players who had joined LIV Golf were not permitted to be part of the European Team. Henrik Stenson lost his position as captain. European legends like Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter, as well as Lee Westwood as a player or assistant captain were banned from the team.

Rory McIlroy, at the time, was for the ban and spoke out against the players who were not allowed to participate in the Ryder Cup.

McIlroy stated in September that “they will miss being here (Rome), more than we are missing them.”

Rory has changed his tune now that Jon Rahm is the player in question.

McIlroy told Sky Sports News that he was speaking with the company about his comments.

“Jon will be at Bethpage in 2025.” The European Tour will have to change the eligibility rules for the Ryder Cup because of this decision. Jon Rahm is a must-have for the next Ryder Cup team .”

“I will miss him every week. He’s got so much talent and is so tenacious. He’s also a great Ryder Cup teammate.

The thing I realized is that it’s not fair to judge someone who makes a choice that they believe is right for them.

This morning, the Northern Irishman appeared on X to respond to a comment asking why he had changed his mind about Rome.

Rory and Sergio Garcia fell out over Garcia’s decision in 2022 to join LIV. He seems to be taking a new approach with the latest Spaniard to leave the PGA Tour.
