Rory McIlroy wins Claret Jug by securing an even-par round in the British Open

Jul, 2023

HOYLAKE (England) — Rory McIlroy clenched a fist when he made par on the last hole of his first round at Royal Liverpool Golf Club.

McIlroy knew it was still early in The 151 st British Open, but he wanted to avoid a round that went over par. He recovered from 2-over after his first 12 hole to shoot an even-par round on Thursday. McIlroy’s round was not what he wanted, but he did not dig himself a big hole either. He won the Genesis Scottish Open last Sunday and is trying to end his nine-year winless streak in majors.

McIlroy reached red figures after a birdie on the second hole, but missed a shot on the fourth. He then missed a par putt of 2 feet at No. 8. After he bogeyed the 12th, it looked like a missed chance at another major.

McIlroy was patient, and made a 40-footer at 14, and then a birdie on the par-5 15 . McIlroy’s par-saving save at 18 was impressive, after he failed to escape from a steep-faced bunker protecting the left side.

McIlroy stated that “when you hit the ball into these bunkers, you are riding your luck.”

He had one leg in the bunker and one out on his second try.

McIlroy was pleased to get the score back up.

He did not look as sharp as he had last week when he won his 24 th PGA Tour career title, and jumped back to No. The world’s No. 2 is McIlroy. McIlroy has won three of his four majors in 2014, including this one.

“Rory committed some tactical mistakes today.” Brandelchamblee of Golf Channel said that Rory made some tactical errors today. If you play too well, you can be playing too aggressively. To see a player with his skills short side himself so many times, you must think that he did not have the best strategy.

McIlroy will leave in the morning on Friday, along with Jon Rahm, Justin Rose and others.

He said, “I’m right there.” “Go out the next morning and shoot a 60s-style shot and I will hopefully be in the mix.”
