The R&A announced that the 154 th Open would be played at Royal Birkdale, in 2026.
Southport Links hosted the original golf championship 10 times. The last time was in 2017, when Jordan Spieth won a thrilling final-round duel against Matt Kuchar, lifting the Claret Jug in its first appearance.
The American golfer joined the likes of Peter Thomson, Arnold Palmer and Johnny Miller at Royal Birkdale. Scott MacPherson wrote about Royal Birkdale in Golf’s Royal Clubs: “There are clubs and courses that are outstanding, but Royal Birkdale is the perfect combination of them both.”

Slumbers stated that “Royal Birkdale, a world-class championship venue, will provide the world’s top men’s golfers a fair but tough test of their abilities and talents as they compete for Claret Jug.” It has been a place of many memorable moments, which are interwoven with the history of the Championship. One such moment was the dramatic final round that Jordan Spieth played in 2017, when he won the Claret Jug for the first. In three years, we look forward to a special event and it will be interesting to see who will join the list of famous Champion Golfers that have won at Royal Birkdale.”
Next week, the 151st st open will be hosted by Royal Liverpool. Scotland’s Royal Troon is booked to host in 2024. Northern Ireland’s Royal Portrush has been assigned the honor for 2025. The week of July 12- 19 is the date for 2026’s 11th Open at Royal Birkdale.
