Fancy a beer on one of golf’s more experienced professionals? Get down to the TPA Scottsdale on Super Bowl weekend.
There isn’t much debate that this year’s Waste Management Phoenix Open has been the most explosive, raucous and news-worthy of recent times.
From crowds ready to rush past security at the infamous 16th hole, the subsequent denial, from the dangers of the water hazards to the strange ruling given to Xander Schauffele, this year’s elevated Arizona event has had it all.
Record crowds have surely meant beer sales on the legendary stadium 16th hole have gone through the roof, helped, as always, by Ryan Palmer’s free drink money.
Palmer, a 46-year-old veteran of 15 of these events – 13 in a row from 2009 – is a regular at the best-known par-3 in golf, not only with the clubs, but with a free drink for the crowd.
Palmer himself tweeted a photo relating to the generosity of the four-time PGA Tour winner and a two-time runner-up at TPA Scottsdale, showing a golf ball thrown into the crowd, with a $10 bill attached for some free refreshment.
The leaderboard may well have looked very similar to that of a major all week, but fans may only have eyes for one name post-cut, and Palmer made it with ease.
