On Thursday, a structure at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Rome, Italy, erupted into flames just days after it hosted the 2023 Ryder Cup.
Social media has been flooded with a video of a three story hospitality stand that was engulfed by fire. The smoke cloud produced could be seen for miles. Local news reported that there are five firefighting teams on the scene, and that no injuries have been reported. Residents were notified to close their window.
A fire was reported earlier today in one of Marco Simone Golf and Country Club’s temporary hospitality structures, located to the right of first fairway. Local fire crews responded to the scene around 5:07 pm local time, and brought the blaze quickly under control. The incident did not result in any injuries and the fire was contained to the structure. The golf course and any other structure were not damaged. “The cause of the fire has been investigated.”
Over the past week, hundreds of thousands of fans gathered at the club to watch Team Europe defeat Team USA 16 1/2-11 1/2 and reclaim The Ryder Cup.

The original design of the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club was by David Mezzacane & Jim Fazio. It opened in Rome in 1989. In 2018-2020, the layout was renovated by a European Golf Design team led by Dave Sampson and Tom Fazio II. Tom Fazio II is a top American architect who worked with his father on the original design. The Ryder Cup was the main reason for the renovation, which included a complete rerouting the hilly course. The holes were designed to encourage match play with 155 feet in elevation change. There are also several par 4s that can be driven. Marco Simone, a public access layout, offers tee-times on the website.
