Sahith Theegala’s stellar debut season on the PGA Tour led many to believe that the 2022-23 year would be a breakthrough one for him.
The 25-year old Californian had a great year, but it wasn’t quite as good as his debut on Tour. He finished second in the RSM Classic and had seven top-10 finishes. However, he was 31st on the FedEx Cup and missed the Tour Championship.
Theegala stated earlier this week that he would like to play again. It’s not hard to understand why.
Theegala has finally gotten over the hump and won his first PGA Tour title at the 2023 Fortinet Championship held in Napa, California. Theegala shot a 21-under-267 on the North Course at Silverado’s Resort. The wait for one the most promising young players in the game is over.
Theegala took control of the tournament in the final round with a 4-under-68. He had three birdies on his first five golf holes. Theegala led by two shots going into the final round. After a bogey on the last hole, he won by two.
Justin Thomas, a fellow United States Ryder Cup team member with Thomas and the Fortinet Championship’s two-time defending winner, finished the tournament at T-7 and shot an even-par 72. He was the sole fifth finisher at 15 under par. Max Homa finished T-7 at 13 under par, and is a United States Ryder Cup Team member who was also the two-time Fortinet Championship winner.
Rookie S.H. Kim placed second alone at 19 below.
Theegala and Tom Hoge won the QBE Shootout in December last year, but it does not count as a PGA Tour win. There’s no question about Theegala’s victory in wine country on Sunday.
