OLYMPIA FIELDS (Ill.) – Max Homa is not alone as the Olympia Fields Country Club course record holder.
Sam Burns equaled Homa’s 62 from a day before, making four birdies each on the way to a round without bogeys.
Burns stated, “I didn’t just want to tie him up. I wanted to beat him.” “But I will take it.”
Burns only had six birdies in his first 36 holes at the BMW Championship. He shot 71 and 70 to fall 11 behind and started early on Moving Day. Burns was one of only two players projected to fall out of the top 30, and book a return ticket to Atlanta on Sunday. He told his caddie Travis Perkins, and the rest of his team, that he wanted to play confidently, regardless if it was 72 or a different score. I want to play confidently, free and see what happens.
This strategy worked perfectly on Saturday, as Burns birdied the first hole and then went back-toback at Nos. Burns made birdies on holes 4 and 5, and then added four more over a five hole stretch, starting with the ninth. What was his favorite? A sand-shot at the par-3 13 th, from the bunker on the front right of the green.
He said, “It was easy.” It was uphill. I had enough green and a little wind. “I just had to cut it and I did.”
Burns is projected to be ranked No. 18 in the FedEx Cup and will play Tour Championship next week in Atlanta. Burns is currently ranked 18th in the FedEx Cup, and will be playing in the Tour Championship in Atlanta next week. Burns, however, said that he’s not too worried about it.
If I succeed, that’s great. “If I don’t make it, I can go home for an extra week,” said he. “Whatever happens, the Lord already has it planned out and I can accept whatever happens,” he said.
Making the U.S. Ryder Cup Team is another matter.
“I don’t want anything more,” he replied.
