Sarah Jane Smith broke a 15-year drought in Australia and beat a field of men to the victory.
Smith, 38, shot 63 to 65 over the weekend at Webex Players Series TPS Murray River mixed gender event. He won by five shots over Victorian Andrew Martin, and Queenslander Shae Wolls-Cobb. Three of the eight events in the series have been won by women, Smith joining Hannah Green from Australia last year and Min A Yoon from South Korea at Rosebud the week before Smith.
Smith, who won the Epson Tour’s last title, was joined at Cobram Barooga Golf Club by her husband Duane, and their three-year-old son Theo. Smith was unsure if she would continue playing after losing her LPGA card. Smith finished 170th in the CME points ranking.
Smith, who is based in Orlando, spent the offseason with Grant Field, Cameron Smith’s teacher back in Australia.
Smith said that Smith had been telling him repeatedly that “it’s not over until I want it to,” Australian Golf Media reported. It’s amazing to see it all come together so quickly. I was done by the end of last yea, unless anything changed. “I’m happy and a bit surprised by this.”
Smith’s next challenge is the Vic Open at 13th Beach this week.
