Schupak: I’d like to see the PGA Tour 2024.

Dec, 2023

It’s time to imagine some exciting scenarios for the PGA Tour 2024 season. It may seem like wishful thinking, but I’ll settle for a few.

I would like to see Patrick Cantlay receive a new hat – maybe one of those huge hats? – and Will Zalatoris fix his short-putting problems as Lucas Glover has done this year. I’d like to see Tiger do more than play hit-and-giggle in December, and not send out another press release announcing a new surgery. I’d like to see Adam Scott and Jordan Spieth back in the winners’ circle.

Sam Saunders said that there are no bad events. All of them are great, and people from the Quad Cities and San Antonio who have attended for more than 50 years or 100 years deserve to see high-quality fields.

I would love to see Chesson Hadley shoot 57 at American Express in Palm Desert. What would it be like to introduce yourself to Al Geiberger, Jim Furyk, and the rest of the American Express team as Mr.57?

I would like to see AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am get some energy back. It was Exhibit A of a tournament losing stars, other than Jordan Spieth who is paid to attend by the title sponsor. I am excited to see the field reinvigorated at one of golf’s cathedrals. A star-studded Pebble field is better than Ray Romano or Bill Murray any day.

I’d like to see Duran Duran perform at the Bird’s Nest in February. I’m in for “Hungry Like the Wolf”, “Rio”, and “Girls on Film”.

I would like to see the Genesis Invitational winner shake Tiger’s hands at the trophy presentation and be eligible for a title defense in 2025. Last year’s winners were Jon Rahm and Joaquin Niemann, both of whom moved to LIV prior to the next tournament. The coolest Hollywood script that would be rejected would be Tiger winning Riviera, which is his kryptonite, and the tournament and course he has played the most times without winning. He would then claim his 83 rd title, and break the tie with Sam Snead in terms of all-time Tour wins. The Internet would go crazy.

I would like to see Rickie, who signs autographs as freely as Arnold Palmer did in the past, wear the King’s red alpaca sweater that was awarded to Palmer’s champion at the Orlando tournament.

In honor of the 50 th Players I would like to see the winner jump into the lake on 18 at TPC Sawgrass, just as Jerry Pate did back in 1982. This should be the male version of Poppy’s Pond.

Rory McIlroy or Jon Rahm should be in the final group at the Masters on Sunday. It wouldn’t be a bad thing if Tiger, Scottie Scheffler and the rest of the group were tied at the top as they hit the nine-hole back.

Beth Ann Nichols, a colleague of mine, said that she would like to see a greater number of co-ed team at the Grant Thornton Invitational. I agree with that, but I want to take it a step further. Let’s make the Zurich Classic of New Orleans a co-ed event. This event was given a new lease of life by the team format, but we should go further and include women.

It doesn’t matter if the PGA Tour brings back a new match-play event or a tournament that is already on the schedule. They need to do it ASAP. It’s not a good idea for the Tour to let Austin drop off the calendar.

I’d like to see a major champion for the first time at the PGA. Xander Schwiefele, Patrick Cantlay, and Tony Finau have all been around for a while but I think Viktor Hovland will be next.

I would like to see Billy Horschel go from being first to last and back to first. This is how you can stamp your return.

The U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2. It’s the Major I am most excited to attend in ’24. There’s Disney there for golf fans. We hope Martin Kaymer gets a place on the field, and that some Cinderella tale takes over Jason Gore’s role as the Prince of Pinehurst.

I would like to see Daniel Berger win the Travelers Championship after he returns from injury. I still can’t believe Jordan Spieth beat him with that bunker shot. Or that it was back in 2017.

I would like to see the wind blowing again at the Genesis Scottish Open on Sunday and that my native son Bobby Mac who was beaten by Rory in this year’s national open, wins it this time.

I’d like to see Tommy Fleetwood winning a PGA Tour Title so that I can stop saying he hasn’t. He should either go big or leave and win the British in Troon. We can then ask him if he will ever win in the U.S.

I’m looking forward to some dramatics in Paris with the gold medals at stake. Can you imagine the Norwegian announcers’ outrage if Viktor Hovland sinks a winning putt on 18 at Le Golf National?

I would like to see a Tour amateur win for the first since Phil Mickelson won in 1991. Gordon Sargent, Nick Dunlap or Nick Dunlap could easily win the Barracuda Championship, 3M Open and Rocket Mortgage Classic.

I would like to see a pro who has barely broken 80 in the entire season, win the Wyndham championship and qualify for FedEx Cup just as Jim Herman and Lucas Glover achieved it before them.

For the ultimate rags-to-riches story, I would like to see “mules” win the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup.

Royal Montreal must be the location of a victory by an International Team. I would like to see Nick Taylor win the Presidents Cup at Montreal, a year after he became the first Canuck in history to win the RBC Canadian Open. Adam Hadwin should be thrown out of the celebrations by security.

Most importantly, I would like to see more of the top players competing against one another. If it doesn’t happen, we hope the powers that be can at least agree on a PGA Tour/LIV Ryder Cup style competition. Let’s hope that 2024 is a year where all the drama will be on the golf course, and not off.
