The skinny: Adding a Teryllium Insert to Classically Milled Putters Enhances Feel and Sound to Help Golfers Get a Better Sense of Touch on Putts

Tiger Woods’ first major championship was won in 1997 with a Scotty Cameron Teryllium TeI3 Newport, while Brooks Koepka won five majors using the Scotty Cameron T10 select Newport 2 prototype. But Titleist’s master putter craftsman had never created a retail-ready putter that featured a Teryllium insertion until the Teryllium T22 inserts were released in 2019 by Titleist. The Champions Choice putter family was released two years later. This marked the second time that the exotic material had been made available to the general public. Scotty Cameron just released the Champions Choice Limited Release Putters for 2023, an update to those putters.

Four putters are available in this family: Newport Plus, Newport 2 Plus and Newport 2.5 Plus. Each is a slightly bigger version of the putter with the same name. In January, the Super Select family introduced Plus versions of putters.

All Champions Choice Limited Release Putters are made from 303 stainless and feature a weight at the toe and heel of the sole. This allows fitters to customize the weight of the putter to the golfer’s preference or length. The 6061 aluminum soleplate shifts the weight away from the center of the head to increase stability. They also feature a single alignment to help golfers target the face.

The difference between Super Select and Champions Choice putters is that the Champions Choice was made with a Teryllium insert. You won’t find that alloy on the Periodic Table, because Cameron invented it.

Tellurium copper, a super-soft copper alloy, is created from 12 different metals. “No one had ever heard of tellurium [when Cameron developed the material], but everyone else was interested in beryllium, nickel, and copper. So I called and registered the trademark Teryllium,” Cameron said in Golfweek’s 2018 article about Brooks Koepka’s putter.

Three screws are visible on the backside of the putter. The Teryllium Insert is placed over a layer vibration-dampening tape. The screws used for the Button back pattern replace the Cherry Bombs that are found on many Scotty Cameron Putters. The Button Back pattern on the Champions Choice putters has been painted with red, white, and blue. However, you cannot see these colors when you are in the address position, getting ready to putt.
