Sergio Garcia was a hit at the U.S. Open.
He was T-27 in the Los Angeles Country Club after he earned his place through final qualifying. The Spaniard got his friend back as well.
Garcia spoke to reporters ahead of the LIV Golf Andalucia tournament at Valderrama, Spain this week. He said that he and Ryder Cup Teammate Rory McIlroy had rekindled a friendship that had been broken after Garcia joined a new Saudi-backed circuit.
McIlroy passed Angela Garcia, Garcia’s spouse, two weeks earlier in Los Angeles. The two exchanged a greeting. The Northern Irishman then sent a text to Garcia, who was able to approach McIlroy.
Garcia told reporters in Spain on Wednesday that the most important thing was that we met, that we talked and that we had a good conversation with our two friends who wanted to return to the spot. “And that’s what matters most.”
McIlroy and Garcia have attended each other’s marriages, and they have been team-mates on five different occasions at the Ryder Cup. They boast a record of 2-0-2 when paired up together. McIlroy said Garcia is one of his heroes.
McIlroy told the story about how Garcia texted McIlroy that Friday telling him to “basically shut up about LIV.”
McIlroy said, “I sent him a couple daggers back and that was all.”
Garcia claimed in February that McIlroy was lacking maturity when it came to his attitude towards players who had left LIV. It appears that things are now fine between the two.
Garcia said that the U.S. Open was an amazing event. “Not just because of that. I felt like I played well. More than anything else, I feel like I have a new friend, one that I felt I had lost over the past year. We had a wonderful conversation and I felt like I had that friend back. That means a lot to me. It’s very positive.”
