DETROIT — Golf is a fickle sport.
You can hit the ball on a straight like Tony Finau last year, en route for a five-stroke win. This year? This year?
You can play well in one week and win the major, as Hideki Matsuyama and Webb Simpson did before. This week? This week?
You can shoot 62, like Justin Thomas last Saturday at Travelers. This week? Thomas has fewer birdies in his two days of work combined and is on the road.
84 out of 156 golfers at Detroit Golf Club shot at least 4-under-140 for 36 holes and will be staying for the weekend in order to try and win a PGA Tour Title at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
With 84 players, the Rocket Mortgage Classic tied the AT&T Byron Nelson as the tournament with the most players who made the TOUR 36-hole cut this season.
