Seven co-founders of LPGA named as finalists for the World Golf Hall of Fame

The LPGA announced last March that all 13 founding members of the tour would be inducted into the hall as an honorary category. Five of the original founders of the LPGA were not in the Hall of Fame at the time.

Seven founders who are not yet in the World Golf Hall of Fame are now finalists. Alice Bauer, Bettye Detweiler and Helen Hicks are among the finalist. Opal Hill and Shirley Spork, Helen Hicks and Opal Hill could also join the six other finalists – Betty Jameson and Betty Berg, Betty Jameson and Marilynn Smith and Louise Suggs – at the WGHOF.

The WGHOF announced the names of 12 finalists for 2024 induction: Padraig Harrington (Tom Weiskopf), Johnny Farrell (Jim Furyk), Dottie Pepper (19 Sandra Palmer), Beverly Hanson, Cristiekerr (Contributors Peter Dawson, Butch Harmon, Jay Sigel) and Sandra Palmer.

The week of March 6th, 2023 will see the final selections for the 2024 class. The Pinehurst Resort & Country Club, Pinehurst, North Carolina will host the induction ceremony on June 10, 2024. It will also coincide with the 124th U.S. Open.

Spork passed away two weeks after she learned that she would be entering the LPGA Hall of Fame in her 94th year. Spork, in addition to founding the LPGA in 1950 was also the driving force behind the LPGA Teaching & Club Pro Division.

Marlene Hagge is the last living founder of LPGA.
