Sony Open: Five things you should know about the first round, including Jordan Spieth’s confidence and Tiger’s advice for Taylor Montgomery.

Jan, 2023

HONOLULU — Another glorious day of sunshine on Oahu saw Jordan Spieth shoot 6-under 64 at Waialae Country Club, to share the lead in the first round of the Sony Open in Hawaii. He was joined by Chris Kirk and Taylor Montgomery.

Spieth stated that he drove the car well, hit a lot of good wedges, and his putter was more friend rather than foe. It’s amazing what a little bit of confidence can do for your confidence. Spieth made it clear to the rest of the field that he is going to be a force for good this week. He said that he has plenty more to go.

“I feel like I started really well in 2018 and ’19. I might have been at a few events in ’20, but I don’t remember if I did it at Travelers or the PGA in 19. He explained that he just remembered thinking “I know where my game lies and I can fake it as best as I can, but I don’t have great control.” I used my hands very well for a few days. It was convenient that the first two were consecutive. It’s not that I doubted, but I do have an idea of where I am and if I have the shot.

“This is different. These last few years were a bit different. I started off with a great start, and now I’m thinking, OK, I think that I can improve to gain just a little more control. But I was in very good control. It’s all about freedom for me. It is not about separating the arms from your body or trying to save shots. It’s being in front of them, feeling comfortable and able to keep them away.

That’s all there is to it. It seems simple. However, if you are still trying to get rid of bad habits or hit it hard, days like today can be very frustrating. I will admit that I am more confident than I was in previous times. This is a great place to be. I think I can shoot 5- to 6-under every day here. It doesn’t mean it will happen, but I know there are times when I would be asking myself, “How do I keep this stuff together?” Seriously.”

These are just four additional things you should know about the Waialae Country Club’s first round.
