Stephen Ames wins the 2023 Mitsubishi Electric Classic on TPC Sugarloaf

Stephen Ames won his second 2023 win at the Mitsubishi Electric Classic by escaping the field on Sunday.

Ames and David Toms were tied at the top after 18 holes. They enter the final round of the tournament with a 3-shot lead over Ken Tanigawa.

He shot a 4-under-68 on Sunday at TPC Sugarloaf, in Duluth (Georgia), to finish the day at 19 under par and to cruise to a four shots victory over Miguel Angel Jimenez. Ames, 59 years old, is the only other two-time winner on PGA Tour Champions in this season. Ames won the Trophy Hassan II tournament in Morocco in February. Ames has won four senior-level events.

Toms shot a 65 in the first round, a 70 in the second and a 76 on Sunday to tie for 24th place.

Two aces were recorded at the Mitsubishi in the past week, both on the par-3 sixteenth hole. Jimenez’s hole-in one came on Friday, and Steve Stricker followed suit on Saturday. Jimenez’s 14th professional ace was on the DP World Tour (11), the Champions Tour (3), and the PGA Tour (1).

Bernhard Langer finished in a tie for 8th place, having tied for the lead with 45 victories on the Champions Tour.

Tim O’Neal is a rookie in the senior tour. His best finish was a tie for 10th. His previous best finish was a tie with 15th.
