The new TGL, led by Tiger Woods & Rory McIlroy and featuring technology-based golfers such as Rory McIlroy & Tiger Woods, announced that the event will be delayed until 2025.
The league reported that a temporary power and backup system caused the SoFi Center Dome – which was the host venue for TGL matches at the Palm Beach State College campus – deflate over night on Tuesday, November 14. The air-supported dome portion of the venue suffered damage, but there were no injuries. Most of the technology in the venue was unaffected.
In a statement, the league said that the decision had been made after evaluating short-term solutions and potential construction timelines as well as player schedules, primetime sports TV calendar, and possible short-term fixes. ESPN was scheduled to broadcast TGL matches starting on Tuesday, January 9, 2024. This is the day following the College Football Playoff National Championship.
The postponement has mixed emotions of excitement and disappointment. We are most grateful that no injuries occurred. McIlroy stated, “We are looking forward the launch of TGL.” While the delay was disappointing, it allowed us to regroup and refocus.
Woods said, “I have always believed in TGL and, as momentum has grown over the past year, I am even more excited for what it can become for the fans of the game around the globe.” “Even though the events from last week will require us to adjust our timelines I am confident that our committed players will bring this concept to life.”
Jon Rahm, who was the first to join Woods and McIlroy as co-founders, pulled out of the league earlier this month. He said, “While I think it’s an amazing opportunity, it would take a commitment level that I cannot offer right now.”
Six teams, each consisting of four PGA Tour professionals, will compete for 15 matches in the regular season and then semifinals and finals.
Rosalyn Durant released a statement on behalf of ESPN. “We are partners and fully support TGL’s decision. From the start, we have always believed in their vision and they are still our partners. It will be better with the extra time to test, plan and rehearse. “We are looking forward to the launch of the first season on ESPN.”
