The 2023 U.S. Open was the most watched event on NBC since 2019, an increase of 27 percent over last year

Jun, 2023

Wyndham Clark won his first major title at Los Angeles Country Club on Sunday, beating out a leaderboard dominated by stars.

Social media was full of criticism for the 2023 U.S. Open due to its commercial overload, poor announcing standards and lack of atmosphere caused by general admission policy.

The ratings for TV were very good.

NBC Sports reported that the 2023 Open had a 27 percent increase compared to The Country Club Championship in Brookline, Massachusetts. NBC Sports and Peacock averaged 6.2 million viewers. This is the highest number of viewers since 2019, when the event took place at Pebble Beach.

The numbers also increased by nine percent when compared with 2021 (Torrey Pines where Jon Rahm won the U.S. Open).

NBC reports that across all platforms, the finals averaged 8,8 million viewers in prime time. The peak was 10,2 million between 9:30 and 9:45 p.m. ET.

Comparatively, the PGA Championship attracted 4.5 million viewers in Oak Hill last month.

In 2023, the Masters will still be the most watched men’s event. CBS reported that the broadcast was the highest-rated golf broadcast of the last five years, on any network.
