The freshman from Texas shot an all-time program record of 11-under-61 in the first round at the Southwestern Collegiate.

Jan, 2023

It is hard to imagine Jacob Sosa starting the 2023 Southwestern Collegiate better.

The only thing the freshman at Texas did Monday, was to etch his name into the Texas record books for the lowest 18-hole score. He set a new record at North Ranch Country Club, Westlake Village, California with an 11-under 61, beating the previous record by two strokes. Four Longhorns previously shot 63: Gavin Hall (2016), Brandon Stone (2012)-13, David Gossett 2000 NCAA Championship and Justin Leonard (1994 NCAA Championship).

Sosa’s 61 was also a tournament record, and the lowest 18-hole round at North Ranch Country Club. With 36 holes remaining, he scored three eagles and five birdies to help Texas win the first round team lead.

Two other Texas freshmen were also in the top six, Keaton Vo scoring 5 under and Christiaan Maas scoring a 4-under.

Sosa was four shots ahead of Luke Potter, Arizona State, in Tuesday’s second round. In the team competition, Texas led Arizona State by five shots.

From 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., the second and third rounds at the Southwestern Collegiate will air on Golf Channel. ET. Live scoring is available.
