The largest Day 1 lead at the Ryder Cup since 1979 (and the winner)

Sep, 2023

The American and European teams both want to start off well at the Ryder Cup. However, this does not guarantee victory on Sunday night.

Team Europe is leading the United States by 6 1/2-1 12 in the Ryder Cup, which will be held at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club near Rome in Italy. The hosts had a great Friday, after a 19-9 defeat in the United States two years earlier at Whistling Straights. Europe won the fourball match and halved the three foursomes matches before winning the fourth.

It is the first Ryder Cup in history that the United States didn’t win a match on a single day.

Since 1979, only five teams have scored 6 or more points on the first day of the Ryder Cup. This year is one of them. In three out of four previous Ryder Cups, the winning team was the one who had the lead after the first day.

The Ryder Cup has had some big leads on Friday since 1979. See who won.
