It is hard to find a better start to a round that Davis Thompson had Thursday at La Quinta Country Club’s The American Express.
Thompson, a rookie on the PGA Tour aged 23, was 7 under after six hole. He also had a stretch of 6 over in four holes that included consecutive eagles at the par-5 fifth, and par-5 sixth.
Birdie. Par. Birdie. Eagle. Eagle. Birdie. It’s a lot more circles than you would expect to see on the card.
Thompson was the first player to shoot 7 under his first six holes since Robert Streb, 2021 CJ Cup. He is also the first player to record consecutive eagles since Shane Lowry, at the 2022 Open Championship in St. Andrews.

Thompson finished the nine-hole with an 8-under 28.
He has been able to make five cuts in six starts and was T-9 at this year’s Fortinet Championship. His hot start put him in front of the pack early in La Quinta (California).
Four golfers achieved three eagles last season. Trey Mullinax at AT&T Byron Nelson, Shane Lowry, Open Championship, Shane Lowry, Open Championship, and Shane Lowry. Stephan Jaeger, Mexico Open At Vidanta. Carlos Ortiz at WM Phoenix Open.
