LOS ANGELES – When Rickie fowler, the co-leader of the U.S. Open, birdied his first three holes on Saturday it looked like we would have another good day.
The scores were affected by the wind and the sun at Los Angeles Country Club. On Thursday, 55 golfers were at par or higher. On Friday, the number of players who scored at or above par dropped to 41, with an average of 72.22 points, which is 0.84 more than the record low score of 71.38 on Thursday.
After 36 holes, a few would-be major champions are at the top of Beverly Hills’ leaderboard. Fowler shot a 2-under-68 to take the lead with 10 under par, just one shot ahead of Wyndham (67). Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele and Harris English are all tied for third at 8 under.
Here’s what you might have missed on a busy U.S. Open Friday in 2023. From Fowler’s peaks and vallies round to the lack of atmosphere and notable players heading home, this is what you may have missed.
