Trent Phillips, who shot a final round 66 to tie for the lowest round of the day on Sunday, on the Korn Ferry Tour, will play Jorge Fernandez Valdes in a playoff at the UNC Health Championship 2023.
Phillips, a pro since last year, made four birdies in a row on Nos. The 13th through 16th holes were followed by back-to-back Pars. Valdes, who shot a 68 after eagleing the 9th par-4 hole, also made it to the bonus round at Raleigh Country Club, Raleigh, North Carolina.
Both golfers achieved 13 under par, one better than the rest of the field. This forced overtime.
Valdes won for the first Korn Ferry Tour in 80 starts, after making birdie at the first playoff hole. Prior to this victory, Valdes had made five top-25s during the 2023 season and missed five cuts.
Valdes, his wife Martina, and daughter Azalea celebrated the award presentation on the 18th hole with him.
Grayson Murray, a Raleigh native and third-round leader, birdied the last hole. However, he had a disastrous nine-hole back-nine. He made a double-bogey at the par-5 12th as well as bogeys at Nos. 13, 16 and 17. He missed the playoff by one shot after shooting a 39 on his back nine and a 1-over final round 71. Murray tied John Augenstein, who had won the Korn Ferry Tour two weeks earlier.
Kyle Westmoreland was the first Air Force Academy grad to earn a PGA Tour card. His first round 63 tied as the lowest round of the week. He was a shot behind in the final round and finished solo fifth with a final-round score of 71.
