BRADENTON (Florida) — After the second round of World Champions Cup on Friday, where Team International held a half-point advantage over Team USA. International captain Ernie Els said that the lead was only meaningful until the final putt.
The inaugural event of The Concession Golf Club did not come down to the final putt. The last hole was the deciding factor.
Team USA, which trailed Team International by 2.5 points on Sunday with three holes remaining, won the inaugural event of The Concession Golf Club after David Toms (who played a clutch final stretch) and Billy Andrade (who played a clutch final stretch) overcame this margin.
Team USA scored 221 points. Team International came in second place with 219 and Team Europe was third with 208. Toms, 56, won 13 PGA championships between 1992 and 2017. He earned 4.5 points out of a maximum 6. Andrade had won 11 points in the match before, replacing Team USA Captain Jim Furyk who was injured. He beat out International’s Vijay Singh, and Europe’s Miguel Angel Jimenez.
Team International, trailing by a half-point after having led for most of the day on Sunday, had the chance to win the championship with two points at the par-4 hole No. Toms and Team Europe Bernhard Langer both bogeyed the 9th hole.
Retief Goosen, of International, only had to make par in order to earn two points for his team and win the match. Goosen was a two-time U.S. The approach shot was hit into the penalty zone. The double-bogey he made earned him zero, while Europe and the USA each received a half point.
Three points were available per hole. The lowest score received 2 points, second lowest scored 1 point and third lowest got zero. The points are split if teams tie with the same score. If two teams tie with a low total, each team gets 1.5 points. The third place earns nothing.
Each member of Team USA entered the interview room with an American flag draped around them after the match ceremony. They then drank champagne from the trophy.
Toms’ performance on the final three golf holes was crucial to the USA’s win. The USA trailed the USA by six points before taking a half-point advantage heading into the final green.
Furyk stated, “I really like this team. I talk about their personalities and how easy they are to work with. But this is a tough group.” I think that we have a group of guys with good short game, good putters and guys that won’t give up.
Jerry Kelly was another big contributor for Team USA. He played nine holes without a single bogey and earned 12.5 points. This is the highest score of any player in the morning singles. Els, the captain of Team International, earned 12 points in the morning singles bogey free nine holes. He felt bad for Goosin.
He said, “I feel for Retief.” He told a very hard lie. It’s amazing to be so close. . . Yeah, we’ve lost the last two matches.”
Toms himself didn’t believe his team stood a chance of winning, especially when the USA was 6 points behind.
“On No. He said: “On No. At that point, I honestly didn’t think it would matter, as I didn’t know how we were doing. It was good that I made the putt. When I reached the 18th tee, I heard “USA!” After Billy (Andrade), made his putt, I thought, “Man, we’re in great shape.”
Brett Quigley, Team USA’s Brett Quigley, said of the format: “It has exceeded all my expectations.” It was incredible. It was so much more than I expected and there was just so much love. Every week, we do our own thing. We go home. Then we move on to the next. It was so special to have our families and caddies here this week.
Els said, “The Americans kept grinding on the 18th,” We just couldn’t get that putt to the top of the hill. K.J., I missed it. Vijay Singh missed it. Retief was unfortunate to have told such a hard lie.
What a great week! This thing works.”
