The yellow ribbons in the final round of the Memorial Tournament mean what?

Jun, 2023

DUBLIN (Ohio) — Golfers at Muirfield Village Golf Club will be adding an extra element to their clothing as they prepare for the final day 2023 Memorial Tournament.

Golfers and Memorial Tournament participants are expected to wear yellow, including ribbons in their hats to take part in the PGA Tour’s and Children’s Miracle Network’s campaign to raise $100,000,000 for CMN’s hospitals, including Nationwide Children’s Hospital, over the next five-years to fund pediatric treatment for millions of kids.

According to the Memorial Tournament’s website, the “Play Yellow” concept was inspired by the yellow shirts Jack Nicklaus donned in the final rounds of tournaments. He wore the color yellow in honor of Craig Smith, a son of a friend who died aged 13 from bone cancer.

He won the 1986 Masters Tournament in a yellow shirt.

To help raise funds for the CMN Hospitals, the “Play Yellow” campaign encourages Memorial Tournament players and fans to:

  • Wear yellow to the final round on Sunday
  • Donate at concession stands or within the golf shop. Donate at concessions stands or the golf shop
  • All donations received during the Memorial Day will be distributed and allocated to various initiatives at Nationwide Children’s Hospital
