AVONDALE, La. Beau Hossler, Wyndham Clark and other golfers have won many accolades. Hossler qualified for the U.S. Open when he was a teenager and Clark played on a national championship NCAA team. Both men have maintained their PGA Tour status, but a victory has eluded them so far.
This could all change in one stroke tomorrow as they are leading by one stroke the team of Sungjae Im & Keith Mitchell going into the final round at the Zurich Classic New Orleans. Can a partner make the difference between winning and losing?
When you are alone, you can feel like you are on an island. Clark explained that when the momentum starts to go bad and you are on your own it can be difficult to change. With a teammate you can feed off of each other, and not let the momentum go in the wrong directions. So, I hope we can be as light-hearted and relaxed tomorrow as we have been the past three days.
Hossler made a few birdies from inside 10 feet and Clark connected at the third and No. 26. Hossler birdied from within 10 feet on the third hole and Clark made his first two from 26 feet. 12.
Zurich Classic: Sunday tee times
Clark stated, “That was a difficult hole and we sort of snagged it.” “That was an enormous momentum for the back nine.”
On Sunday the format will switch back to foursomes or alternate shot. The defending champions Patrick Cantlay, and Xander Schnaffele, were able exploit this to shoot a 9-under 63. They are 11-under combined for the two rounds of Best-Ball, but settled for a 6-under 66 for the third round. Cantlay only made one birdie that day. They will begin the day with a score of 20-under par and T-10. To defend, they will likely need a special round in which they shoot 63 or lower.
Clark and Hossler, as well as several other teams aiming for their first victory, have a chance to make history in the final round.
Hossler stated, “The more you do something, the more you become comfortable, and I hope we can take advantage of that tomorrow.”
Clark said, “I hope we can keep the momentum going in our direction.”
