Anne Van Dam’s defeat at the KPMG Women’s Irish Open on Sunday may have been due to an unfortunate turn of events.
Van Dam, a Ladies European Tour official, and Van Dam tried to sneak under the rope while heading to the first hole of the playoff. However, the rope caught the driver and snapped the cord immediately, forcing the bag to fall to the ground. Van Dam and Smilla Soenderby of Denmark, along with Lisa Pettersson of Sweden were set to face off in a playoff after finishing the tournament at 16-under.
This was Van Dam’s backup driver, as her primary driver had been damaged on a flight from Ireland.

Van Dam, who couldn’t find a replacement for her, hit a 3-wood at the first hole of the playoff. She got to the green in two, but missed a putt for eagle. Soenderby, meanwhile, knocked the approach shot to 12 feet but dropped the putt. She won her first title.
Van Dam won five times on the LET but has not been in the winner’s enclosure since the Spanish Women’s Open of 2019.
