Prepare for the TGL to air on ESPN.
ESPN announced on Thursday that it had acquired the media rights to TGL, a new technology-infused golf league developed by Tiger Woods’ TMRW Sports and Rory McIlroy. ESPN has signed an exclusive agreement to host TGL matches on its network in the United States, when the league begins in January 2024.
ABC will broadcast an ABC preview of the TGL’s first season on Saturday, December 30, one week and a half before the TGL’s inaugural match airs on ESPN in primetime on Tuesday, January 9, the evening after the College Football Playoff National Championship. The preview will include a look at the first season of the TGL and the six PGA Tour teams, although 12 of the 18 players have already been revealed. The second round of matches will be aired on Tuesday, January 16, at 7 pm. The second week of matches will air Tuesday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m. ET.
All matches will be broadcast on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPN+. The initial releases from TGL Sports and TMRW Sports indicated that the league would be playing on Monday nights. However, the first two games will take place on Tuesdays.
If you are unfamiliar with the format of this tournament, six teams consisting of three PGA Tour professionals will compete in regular season matches. Then, there will be semifinals and finals. The matches will take place at a short-game facility that is tech-infused. The fans will be able see each shot live on primetime TV for a two-hour broadcast.
Four ownership groups are announced so far: TGL Atlanta Boston Golf Club Los Angeles Golf Club New York Golf Club.
TGL announced earlier this week a multi-year agreement with SoFi Technologies. SoFi is a digital personal financial company. SoFi has become the TGL’s presenting sponsor. The league’s arena at Palm Beach State College, which is located on campus, will now be called the SoFi Center.
